United Way of Whitley County Welcomes Carlee LaRue

United Way of Whitley County welcomed Carlee LaRue as the first AmeriCorps member in Whitley County. She will serve on the national United Against Opioid Abuse project.

Carlee, a Columbia City native, graduated from Indiana University in 2016 with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Fitness Instruction. After she completed her degree, she served her first term of AmeriCorps on the Healthy Schools project in the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation in Ellettsville, Indiana.

Her involvement with the community led her to join the Community Capacity for Prevention and Education grant project in Bloomington, Indiana. She focused on teaching Say it Straight, an evidence-based communication assertiveness program. She also spent time providing free HIV tests and motivational interviewing with young adults.

Carlee’s objective for this project is to listen to the community and capture the voices of the citizens and stakeholders in Whitley County. She plans to increase the awareness of local resources, improve stakeholder collaboration, and develop a plan to promote a safe, healthy, and welcoming community.
